Wrong! This recipe works just as well owing to the sugary, ethanol delight that is beer. And it's a fantastic way to use up stale beer after a party! Edit Ingredients1 pound (450g) sugar1 or 2 cans of stale beer3 mashed overripe bananas (a great way to use them up)1 cup of molasses or syrup1 cup of fruit juice1 shot of rumEdit Steps1Mix the ingredients listed above in a large bottle or bowl.2Splash the mixture on woodwork, rocks or anything else in your garden.
3Soak a sponge in the mixture and hang the sponge from a tree limb.
4Wait for the butterflies to arrive. Be patient – sometimes it can take some time for the butterflies to work out there is an easy treat available.
Note that butterflies like shade, so you'll get your best results in hot weather placing the mixture in a shaded area.[1]Edit Video
Beyond beer, here are some useful plant ideas for your garden when you're seeking to attract butterflies.Edit TipsEven beer alone will attract butterflies. Simply splash small quantities of beer onto areas where butterflies are likely to alight, such as flowers, plants, fence posts, etc. and wait for them to be attracted.[2]As an added bonus, leave beer in a saucer at the side of an outdoor party to lure away the flies and other buzzing bothers so that your party guests remain insect-free![3]You can increase the chances of a butterfly visit by creating a salt and sand puddle (butterflies are attracted to drinking from salty sources as this apparently aids in their reproduction). Make a sand "puddle" consisting of moist sand with a little salt sprinkled in and situate this near where your beer mix is.[4]Edit Things You'll NeedBottle or bowlMashing implementEdit Related wikiHowsHow to Attract ButterfliesHow to Raise ButterfliesHow to Catch ButterfliesHow to Release Butterflies at a WeddingHow to Handle Butterflies ProperlyEdit Sources and Citationshttp://www.care2.com/greenliving/9-surprising-uses-for-beer.html – research sourcehttp://www.ca.uky.edu/agc/pubs/for/for98/for98.htm – research source? http://www.ca.uky.edu/agc/pubs/for/for98/for98.htm? http://www.avianweb.com/attractingbutterflies.html? http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/food-and-drink/news-wacky-ways-using-beer? http://www.ca.uky.edu/agc/pubs/for/for98/for98.htmArticle Info Featured Article
