For the last few years, companies have been laying off developers to cope with restructuring in an ever-changing market. Today, IO Interactive, best known for their Hitman franchise, laid off almost half of its employees.
An official statement from a spokesperson for IO Interactive was made stating that the company will solely focus on the Hitman franchise with all other projects being cancelled.
“We are making significant changes at IO Interactive as we align our business against a changing and challenging market," read the statement.
"Hannes Seifert, former Production Director, will take over the position of Studio Head at IO. However we have taken the difficult decision to cancel other studio projects and initiatives at IO and reduce the workforce in this studio, which will impact almost half of the employees currently at IO."
The statement continues "For those affected, we are extremely grateful for the hard work which they have contributed, and where it’s possible and appropriate to relocate staff to open positions at other studios within the group, we will try to do so. We are also reaching out to other companies for outplacement opportunities. We sincerely wish them well in their future careers.”
IO Interactive’s last game was Hitman: Absolution which released on November 20, 2012. Though the game sold well, it did not meet sale projections. Even though Hitman is IO Interactive's most popular franchise, the developer is also known for its work on Kain & Lynch and Mini Ninjas.
IO Interactive is currently in pre-production on a new triple-A Hitman game, which will be published by parent company Square Enix.
