There are a lot of reasons why someone might want to check out a guide like T Dub Sanders'. One might be interested in the underside of the game testing field. Others might just want to know what they can gain from a guide that is written to help people understand their role in the gaming industry. Others still are just pining for that ultimate career working alongside game developers and designers.

Whatever the reason, T Dub Sanders has put together one of the biggest and best game testing guides on the market – one that shows the underpinnings of the career in their raw, real format. There are no false promises of automatic testing or sitting at home and playing the newest games for hundreds of dollars a day.

That stuff is all pretty much a pipe dream and most people know it – yet many guide writers try to tell everyone that they can become the biggest and best new game testers in a field that doesn't really exist every day and too many fall for it. On the other hand, what T Dub has put together is a much more realistic, much more comprehensive look at what game testing is really about – the hard work and dedication that goes into becoming someone in charge of all that code each day.

By showing what it really takes to be a game tester, T Dub opens up an actual, realistic path to getting into the industry. He showcases skills needed to get started as a tester, the classes or college majors that people better be willing to invest in if they want to be a professional in this field and much more to help them figure out not only if the career path is right for them but if they are going to be cut out for it. That means a great deal for someone who may or may not know exactly what a game tester does and how it operates.

For anyone that is thinking about taking the path toward becoming a game tester, one of the first things that needs to be done is to learn more about what the career entails. Those people should pick up T Dub's newest guide and get a real insider's look at the job and how it really works. If you're serious about doing what T Dub shows you, you'll be on the fast track toward game testing in no time flat.

Destiny on PS4: Bungie releases gameplay demo of PSU's 'shooter that won E3'

You are here: Home » News » Destiny » Destiny on PS4: Bungie releases ...

Posted July 3rd, 2013 at 18:55 EDT by Kyle Prahl9 Comments

Bungie has released the official gameplay reveal of Destiny, its space-operatic post-Halo shooter, on PS4.

The footage below, first seen during Sony's E3 2013 media briefing, depicts Bungie developers teaming up to travel through an immense wall to explore the uncharted territory of Old Russia on the other side. Along the way, they battle various forms of the Fallen, humanoid aliens with a host of imaginative weaponry and evasive manuevers.

The game's loot and equipment systems are also briefly displayed. The demo narrator's character--a Human Warlock--acquires the Thunderlord, an "exotic machinegun" that he purports to be one of Destiny's best weapons. We also get a glimpse at the gun's talent tree, confirming that weapons in Destiny have numerous unlockable upgrades--including radical changes to the weapon's function and power--that can be acquired with talent points.

PSU awarded Destiny our E3 2013 Best Shooter award, recognizing Bungie's next-gen title as "THE shooter that won E3."

Kyle Prahl was mighty disappointed to learn Destiny won't be coming out until next year. You can follow him on Twitter and Facebook for the musings of a PSU Managing Editor.

Wolfenstein: The New Order compared to Uncharted, not another 'mindless shooter'

You are here: Home » News » Wolfenstein: The New Order » Wolfenstein: The New Order compa...

Posted June 25th, 2013 at 22:53 EDT by Steve Chaffin0 Comments

Ninety-five percent of all shooters released today sport a similar theme: the world has fallen to pieces, and it is up to our protagonist(s) to restore order and find peace within the chaos. Most of these shooters offer up uninteresting characters, predictable plot development, and identical gameplay mechanics. Whenever a new shooter is released, it is therefore up to the modern developer to prove to gamers that its title sports something different, superior to the status quo.

Ladies and gentlemen, here we have the case for Bethesda Softworks' and MachineGames' Wolfenstein: The New Order, which will be releasing on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 this December.

The former Starbreeze team, behind such notable titles as The Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness, has ambitions to make Wolfenstein: The New Order more than simply 'going into rooms and killing things.' Bethesda PR and marketing head Peter Hines made the argument in an interview with IGN, and even compared the game to Naughty Dog's critically acclaimed Uncharted series.

“If you think this is just a mindless shooter where you go into rooms and kill things, of course that doesn’t sound interesting,” said Hines. “But when you figure out what Wolfenstein is actually doing here, what it’s about and what they’re trying to bring to the table, I think there is something there for folks who say, ‘yeah, I want to shoot things, but I want some other stuff too.’”

Praising the Uncharted series for being more than a shooter, Hines claims that The New Order "starts to feel a little like Uncharted, where there's more going on. It’s one of my favorite series on any console, just because of the things it does outside of the shooting that are so compelling and interesting,” he said. “I couldn’t wait for the next cutscene, because the cutscenes are so good. There’s something similar to that here, enjoying the non-shooter parts to that extent."

Noting the past projects of MachineGames' development team, Hines believe that gamers should look to games like The Darkness for a greater understanding of what they hope to accomplish with The New Order:

“If you look at Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness and some of the other things these guys did in the past at Starbreeze, you can see some of the elements that they’re trying to bring into this,” Hines added.

Hines recognizes the seeming omnipresence of shooters in the video game market, pointing out that while it may not be heralded as the shooter franchise of the generation, there is something special that the Wolfenstein universe hopes offer later this year when The New Order hits store shelves.

“We’re not doing Wolfenstein because we think, ‘oh, everybody thinks of Wolfenstein when they think first-person shooters.’ We’re not that naive. But we do think there’s something to this world.”

Steven Chaffin, Jr. is an American editor for PlayStation Universe, and while he has never ventured into the Wolfenstein realm, appreciates the additional effort developers are putting towards creating experiences greater than sheer fun gameplay. This is what keeps him gaming. You can find more work from Steven on his blog, and on Twitter @steven_chaffin.

E3 2013 Awards: Best Shooter

You are here: Home » Features » Electronic Entertainment Expo [E3... » Destiny » E3 2013 Awards: Best Shoote...

Posted June 14th, 2013 at 09:14 EDT by Mike Harradence0 Comments

Amidst the testosterone-fuelled mudslinging between EA and Activision over upcoming juggernauts Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts, Halo studio Bungie delivered a Master Chief-sized boot print on the heads of its rivals with the impressive-looking shooter, Destiny. Yep, forget about contemporary shooters coming this holiday season, as far as PSU.com is concerned, Destiny is THE shooter that won E3.

The scale of Bungie’s blast-'em-up is nothing short of impressive, with the developer trumpeting the fact its sci-fi-thememed, gigantic game world is ‘alive.' Players will encounter in-game events throughout, which are not pre-determined by the game’s creator allowing for an unpredictable, dynamic gameplay experience. Powered by a brand new game engine, Destiny places great emphasis on multiplayer experiences, though eschews much of the traits of traditional MMOs. For example, Bungie has opted for on-the-fly matchmaking, as opposed to the usual process of interacting with players in-game or on a server.

Destiny’s biggest pull however is the game world, taking place in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic setting following an influx of peace and technological advancements known as the Golden Age. However, following an event known as the Collapse, human colonies around the Solar System have dissolved, leaving mankind in a precarious situation. Hostile alien races now occupy the former human colonies, which sees the player – as a member of Guardian of the City – out in force attempting to quell these alien threats and prevent mankind’s extinction.

It’s a bold premise and one filled with legions of unique characters, places and weapons, and more importantly one that is sure to differentiate it from the Halo series. Keep an eye on this one, folks.

FUSE winner announced as action-packed, team-based shooter launches

You are here: Home » News » Fuse » FUSE winner announced as action-...

Posted May 29th, 2013 at 04:20 EDT by PSU Staff1 Comments

A big thanks to everyone who entered our competition to win a PS3 copy of FUSE, Insomniac Games’ upcoming team-based shooter.

Players were asked to try out the FUSE demo and let us know their thoughts in 200 words or less.

The winning entry comes from JackBarry96 who wrote this:

“I thoroughly enjoyed the FUSE Demo as the characters were very interesting; all had great and unique personalities. But what I loved most about the FUSE Demo was the weapons! Weapons are what make Insomniacs game full and enjoyable, such as the amazing Ratchet and Clank series. The co-op in FUSE is absolutely brilliant, it is streamlined and it is very easy to switch from character to character. The controls were very easy to learn and the dodge and cover system works really well with the gunplay. An important aspect of the game is your teammates and because of their helpfulness and intelligent AI, it makes the game a lot of fun. The FUSE demo got me really excited about the game and I am even more so about playing through it!

Congratulations, you have copy of FUSE heading your way.

FUSE launched in North America on May 28. The EU version launches on May 31, 2013.

Read our FUSE preview. We'll have a full review shortly.

You are here: Home » News » PS4 shooter leaked by Visceral G...

Posted May 20th, 2013 at 18:44 EDT by Steve Chaffin0 Comments

According to the resume of concept artist Jehan Choo, publisher Electronic Arts and developer Visceral Games are working on a "next-gen shooter" for PlayStation 4.

Here's a snapshot of Choo's resume (since removed), which details prior work on Dead Space 3, Dante's Inferno, and two untitled projects, including a "Stylized Army Game" and an "Action Fantasy" game.

Not much is currently known about the ambiguous shooter, but more information will likely be released during E3 2013. EA will be hosting its annual E3 media briefing, titled "The Download," at 1 pm Pacific on June 10. PSU will be covering the press conference live, so we'll be the first to break new details to you.

Stay tuned here at PSU.com and on Twitter @PSUdotcom.

Thanks, NeoGAF.

Summary

A solid arcade-style shooter with a rich Western theme, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger serves up fun gameplay with a well executed, albeit predictable, story.

We like

Fun arcade-style combatWell-presented story and campaignDuels and arcade mode are addicting and entertaining

We dislike

Mediocre enemy A.I.Predictable narrativeQTE events are out of place

It's been a while since the Wild West served as the backdrop for an arcade-style first-person shooter. It really is one of the best settings for a shooter given its lawless, gritty and dusty atmosphere. A six-shooter carefully wielded by a sweaty cowboy eyeing the town's rough criminals sets the scene for classic fables of America's notoriously violent western past. The whiskey was strong, the high-noon sun was hot, and the men were brave behind their guns. This setting is absolutely perfect for a videogame and perhaps one of my personal favorites for first-person shooters.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger follows the series' western tradition, but thankfully returns to the classic Wild West instead of the new west from The Cartel. This time around we play as Silas Greaves, a successful cowboy--if you consider the ability to shoot baddies as a success. Silas essentially narrates and retells his life's journey at a saloon, drinking with a captive audience of local drunks. He recalls his encounters of famous western gunners and his journey for revenge.

The story is retold comic book style, with clever cell-shaded cut scenes, witty dialogue, and even a few (predictable) twists and turns. At some points your audience in the bar will pick up the story and recount the more legendary, more glorified version of your tale. You actually play through these versions of the past, but Silas will quickly correct the bar's patrons and tell the true version. This rewinds your gameplay (literally) as you play through the same area once again as it truly happened.

Through your campaign you'll meet famous outlaws and even fight alongside the likes of Billy the Kid and the Sundance Kid. The story frequently brings these iconic figures in and out of levels thanks to Silas' foggy memories. The story is told really well and it's really worth playing Gunslinger if only for the brief and entertaining campaign. That is not to say it's a really good story or captivating. In fact, it's quite comical in its predictability. If you don't take it too seriously and accept you are here for the arcade-style gameplay and some cheap laughs through the story, you'll be rewarded.

At times I forgot I was at home on my HD TV and not in an arcade, pumping money into an old-school game machine. That is a good thing considering the gameplay and level designs are straight out of classic arcade shooters. Levels are diverse but extremely linear, with enemies popping in and out of cover like cardboard cutouts at a local carnival shooting gallery.

Silas is a killing machine and wastes hundreds of baddies in his adventure. Combat is rewarding and entertaining, but extremely simplistic. Unfortunately I found the aiming mechanics to be a bit poor, but I suppose you could make the argument that old guns weren't as precise as they are today. In fact, to follow that old-school feel to the game, the reloading animation is refreshingly slow as Silas tries his hardest to slide in bullet after bullet into his six-shooter.

The game uses an XP/combo system that rewards you for chain kills, headshots, and even hitting enemies on the run. That XP can be spent on an upgrade tree system that gives you abilities for short and long range combat, increased reload speed, and even more ammo. The skills tree feels quite realistic, so don't expect random alien-like superpowers. The only thing here that feels out of place are your slow-motion abilities. The more you kill, the more you fill your slow-mo gauge. Activate it and you'll go Max Payne style slow-motion. You can even dodge bullets in slow-motion. I can't say I used these abilities all that much--though you can't escape the slow-mo bullet dodge when you have a lethal shot headed your way. Gunslinger also has out of place QTE events, but luckily they aren't all that frequent so they don't really slow down the fun of regular combat.

Since combat is fairly enjoyable, it's a shame that enemy A.I. isn't so great. Some enemies literally stand and take your bullets like you hand-wrapped them a gift for their birthdays. Others run around looking for cover but never settle on a location. There are baddies that will charge you ... (continued on next page)
