There are a lot of reasons why someone might want to check out a guide like T Dub Sanders'. One might be interested in the underside of the game testing field. Others might just want to know what they can gain from a guide that is written to help people understand their role in the gaming industry. Others still are just pining for that ultimate career working alongside game developers and designers.

Whatever the reason, T Dub Sanders has put together one of the biggest and best game testing guides on the market – one that shows the underpinnings of the career in their raw, real format. There are no false promises of automatic testing or sitting at home and playing the newest games for hundreds of dollars a day.

That stuff is all pretty much a pipe dream and most people know it – yet many guide writers try to tell everyone that they can become the biggest and best new game testers in a field that doesn't really exist every day and too many fall for it. On the other hand, what T Dub has put together is a much more realistic, much more comprehensive look at what game testing is really about – the hard work and dedication that goes into becoming someone in charge of all that code each day.

By showing what it really takes to be a game tester, T Dub opens up an actual, realistic path to getting into the industry. He showcases skills needed to get started as a tester, the classes or college majors that people better be willing to invest in if they want to be a professional in this field and much more to help them figure out not only if the career path is right for them but if they are going to be cut out for it. That means a great deal for someone who may or may not know exactly what a game tester does and how it operates.

For anyone that is thinking about taking the path toward becoming a game tester, one of the first things that needs to be done is to learn more about what the career entails. Those people should pick up T Dub's newest guide and get a real insider's look at the job and how it really works. If you're serious about doing what T Dub shows you, you'll be on the fast track toward game testing in no time flat.

The Witcher 3 E3 preview: Geralt's final journey is my Game of Show

You are here: Home » Previews » Electronic Entertainment Expo [E3... » The Witcher 3: Wil... » The Witcher 3 E3 preview: G...

Posted June 19th, 2013 at 21:16 EDT by Kyle Prahl3 Comments

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the very last game I saw at E3 last week.

In a week full of surprises, where each day put a new game at the top of my list for "Best of Show," a 60-minute developer demo was all it took to sell me on The Witcher 3's lovingly handcrafted fantasy world and the rich gameplay unleashed within. The Witcher 3 is absolutely, unequivocally my game of show and the next-gen RPG to beat.

At first glance, it's easy to draw parallels with Skyrim--open world, 100 hours of gameplay, mature themes and branching storylines--but The Witcher 3 is actually more like a next-gen Morrowind. Like that PC classic, every inch of this world--35 times larger than The Witcher 2 and 20 percent bigger than Skyrim--is built from scratch to complement narrative and gameplay with geography and realism. Dynamic weather sends gale force winds crashing through a forest; branches and entire trees twist and buckle under pressure. Ancient beasts of myth terrorize towns and stir up conflict between factions over legends and interpretations. As Geralt of Rivia, the titular witcher, you could sail across the ocean to a port with better fish prices (they're in greater abundance across the sea, obviously) and battle torrential rains while dodging enormous whales that crash up for air off the starboard bow. Across the sea, adventure awaits. Caves, ruins, villages, and immense fantasy cities play host to side quests that exist for a reason.

I make this distinction because one of Skyrim's biggest selling points--randomly generated quests for a never-ending stream of content--actually became its biggest weakness over time. Your optional tasks were vapid, devoid of any personality. Finish all the GOOD stuff, the actual storylines with interesting dialogue and meaningful choices, and you're left with mindless fetch quests thrown at you too rapidly and in poor fashion. The Witcher 3 is the exact, merciful opposite: a world of intrigue, deceit, and magical lore where every event, every character, and every single line of dialogue is painstakingly crafted to achieve the vision of a world wrought with real problems and real consequence.

CD Projekt RED's astounding attention to next-gen detail is evident in the live gameplay section shown at E3. What starts as Geralt visiting a castle in the Nordic-inspired Skellige archipelago becomes a wandering journey over land and sea to eventually reach a village with a problem. People have been showing up dead, and the rebellious younger townspeople blame the slow-to-action elders for allowing the mysterious deaths to happen. But the elders are patient for good reason--they suspect that ancient, long-revered gods of the neighboring forest are responsible. Geralt treks into the trees for answers, but not without the promise of coin--and with no guarantee that he'll bother saving the town when the culprit is revealed.

See, that's another part of what makes The Witcher 3 special. Like the engrossing narrative and branching side quests that impress with purposeful detail, Geralt himself is an abrasive counter to the silent, customizable protagonists of other open-world RPGs. Seething with world-weary cynicism and battling demons of his past, Geralt's brooding personality is nothing short of badass, interesting, and (hopefully) a whole lot more. You'll get plenty of dialogue choices throughout the game, and almost as many opportunities to drastically change the world and narrative, but every bit is delivered in the kind of careful, cinematic way that structured gameplay systems allow.

World-changing consequence can even happen off the beaten path, like during the aforementioned village conflict. Once Geralt uses his Witcher Sense (think Arkham's Detective Mode, with the added benefit of filling out an extensive "Wikipedia of monsters") to identify the creature killing villagers, the player has the choice of informing either the reckless youth movement or the wise elders that a female sacrifice is necessary to kill the beast utterly. The side quest branches radically from here. The CD Projekt RED demonstrator opted to side with the younger faction, who are quick to blame the elders' inaction but hesitant to kill off one of their own. The resulting path--including a boss fight against the monster and life-changing, permanent consequences for the village--was likely a far cry from the alternative, where the traditional elders might've sacrificed one or more community members to avoid confronting the forest gods they've revered for centuries.

The combat-oriented approach gave CD Projekt a chance to demonstrate The Witcher 3's improved battle system, which emphasizes the graceful, brutal swordsmanship that defines Geralt. Entirely real-time, 100 percent visceral, combat in The Witcher 3 is an elegant dance of sword stances, magical Signs, and adaptive AI that reacts to everything from Geralt's fearsome dominance (which can make enemies flee) to the presence of allies. Sidestep wolves to slash as they lunge before following up with a blast of Igni fire to their rear. Dive beneath a giant's club and cast Quen to shield yourself before launching a furious frenzy of sword strikes. Stun pillagers with a 360-degree shockwave, opening a window to exploit elemental weaknesses. Parry stri--you get the idea. I didn't go hands-on with the system myself, but CD Projekt has listened to feedback from The Witcher 2 (which had similar, though frustratingly difficult, mechanics) to craft a system that's more accessible and intuitive without losing its old-school PC depth.

Still, it wasn't the combat that sold me on The Witcher 3, nor the rich world or promises of a layered, mature narrative. It was the graphics.

I'm not ashamed to say it. The Witcher 3's visuals are the first to slap me in the face and make me say, 'Holy shit. THIS is next-gen.'

I could go on for pages with the PR spiel about location ambience, real-time weather generation, REDengine 3, and all its trappings, but you've seen the screenshots, and a single, capstone moment captures my feelings much better. As Geralt cast the Igni Sign against the village-munching Leshen, subtle tongues of flame streaked and arced through the air with breathtaking detail. Then, I noticed something even more astounding. The jet of flame had set dozens of floating leaves ablaze. I watched, mouth hanging open, as each leaf burned away to mid-air ashes and the tiny airborne flames died out.

Was it a visual trick meant to look like real-time leaf-burning? Maybe. Do I care? Not a bit. I haven't been this excited for an RPG in years.

The Witcher 3 is coming to PlayStation 4 in 2014.

Kyle Prahl's opinion of The Witcher 3 has nothing to do with the Polish beer provided by CD Projekt RED at the private screening. You can follow him on Twitter and Facebook for PS4 news, opinions, and ravings.

Square explains why it renamed Final Fantasy Versus XIII

You are here: Home » News » Final Fantasy XV » Square explains why it renamed F...

Posted June 19th, 2013 at 06:02 EDT by Mike Harradence3 Comments

Legendary Final Fantasy developer Tetsuya Nomura has shed some light as to why Square Enix opted to rename Final Fantasy XIII Versus.

FF Versus XIII was first announced back in 2006 as a PlayStation 3-exclusive project, though few details emerged on the title in subsequent years. However, at E3 last week, it was confirmed the game had been renamed as Final Fantasy XV.

Chatting in the latest issue of Famitsu, Nomura-san revealed that Square originally flirted with the idea of a name change just a few years after the game’s announcement.

“Around one or two years after we announced FF Versus 13, it was suggested to us to shift to FF15 as part of the company’s direction. By that time, a fair amount of time had already passed since the announcement and Versus was a well-known title, so it wasn’t a given that this would be 15; it could have still been Versus.

“Personally, I came to accept the idea once FF Agito 13's name was changed to Final Fantasy Type-0. As for the timing of the announcement, given that we were changing platforms as well, [the timing] wasn’t something we could decide on our own discretion. We worked together with assorted other divisions to get it announced at this E3.”

“We had originally thought about making this announcement last year, but due to assorted reasons that got delayed. This meant that the lifespan of the current generation of consoles was starting to pose a problem to us.

“If we were a year later, other companies will have more time to research the next generation, and releasing the game against their products on the older generation could have caused us to look inferior when people inevitably compared us.”

Nomura-san went on to say that FFXV couldn’t be realised on current-generation hardware, hence the decision to shift from its PS3-exclusive trappings to PS4 and Xbox One.

“With current-gen systems, we couldn’t fully express what we wanted to do in this project. There were more and more things that we would’ve had to change the form of. However, the assumption was that we’d go ahead with a current-gen release, so went through a trial-and-error process to do as much as we could.

“So we built an alpha version about a year ago, and the company response was ‘If you remained bound to the current generation, will it will be the product you envisioned?’ They suggested shifting fully to next-gen, and that was the spark that led to the move.”

FFXV was given an impressive debut trailer at E3 last week, showcasing action-packed realtime combat and stunning visuals. No release date was given, though presumably it’s still a long way off.

Fresh from their victory at a Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn battle challenge at E3 this week, PSU.com U.S. Managing Editor Kyle Prahl and fellow journalist Jonathan Ottman spill the beans on their experience with Square Enix’s forthcoming MMORPG.

Previously announced for PlayStation 3, Final Fantasy XIV is now also coming to Sony’s next-generation console, with the PS3 launch scheduled for August. Known for its troubled launch on PC a few years ago, Square’s hoping to iron out all the creases for its impending re-launch – but how is it shaping up?

See below for Kyle and Jonathan’s impressions.

Square plans to continue Final Fantasy XV's story with sequels

You are here: Home » News » Electronic Entertainment Expo [E3... » Final Fantasy XV » Square plans to continue Fi...

Posted June 13th, 2013 at 04:52 EDT by Mike Harradence3 Comments

Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed that the upcoming Final Fantasy XV will be the subject of sequels and/or additional content to continue the game’s story.

“In the trailer, there was a line that read “A World of the Versus Epic,” which suggests that it will be part of an epic. While Final Fantasy XV will have one climax, as a story, we plan to continue it further,” Nomura-san told Siliconera.

The FFXV game director said this will allow his team to develop the latest entry in the RPG series without worrying about whether the story and contents can be squeezed into just one title.

“As for as how it will be released, we’ll announce that later on; however, having you wait a long while for a next title isn’t something we would desire…” he said. “Also, we’ve been exploring online compatibilities ever since the shift towards the next-generation hardware was decided.”

Final Fantasy XV was announced at Sony’s E3 press conference on Tuesday. The game was formally known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII and was planned to ship exclusively for PlayStation 3; however, it will now arrive on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Do you welcome the idea of FFXV receiving multiple titles to continue its storyline? Let us know in the comments section below.

Square says Final Fantasy XV's realtime combat doesn't spell the end of command-based battles

You are here: Home » News » Electronic Entertainment Expo [E3... » Final Fantasy XV » Square says Final Fantasy X...

Posted June 13th, 2013 at 09:34 EDT by Mike Harradence1 Comments

Shinji Hashimoto, Final Fantasy’s brand director, has played down concerns that Square is aiming to distance itself from command-based combat in wake of Final Fantasy XV’s gameplay reveal.

The trailer, showcased at E3 earlier this week, depicted a far more action-oriented approach to combat, with realtime sword battles and fancy acrobatics – a far cry from the traditional Final Fantasy combat experience.

However, speaking to OXM, Hashimoto-san said Square has no plans to move away from the traditional command-based shenanigans that we’ve become accustomed to.

“As you are aware, Final Fantasy series has different mechanics in each title,” he said.

“Each time the development team for that title review the appropriate game system, and for Final Fantasy XV we have the action-packed system, but that does not mean the next game will be similar. We’re very looking forward to feedback from the fans on how they like the action packed gameplay.

“I believe that there’s future for both action based RPG and command based RPG. It’s not that we aren’t thinking about the future of command based Final Fantasy, but we think that the action based combat fits Versus XV.”

He added: “Action-based RPG fits Final Fantasy XV and that is why we chose to do it like this. I want a game that is easy to play and therefore I asked the development team to be flexible with the difficulty, and I want to make sure that fans are not disappointed.

“I want you to understand that the Final Fantasy is always evolving, and always challenging, and this is a positive change we made for Final Fantasy XV.”

Final Fantasy XV was originally announced back in 2006 as the PlayStation 3-exclusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII. However, after a long period of silence on the game – and despite continued assurance that the title was still on track for PS3 – Square re-revealed the project during Sony’s E3 press conference on Tuesday evening.

The game, now known as FFXV, will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, though a release date continues to remain elusive.

PS4 Final Fantasy title listed on Amazon France

You are here: Home » News » Electronic Entertainment Expo [E3... » PS4 Final Fantasy title lis...

Posted June 10th, 2013 at 08:03 EDT by Mike Harradence1 Comments

The French arm of Amazon posted a listing for ‘Final Fantasy PS4’ earlier today before quickly pulling it offline.

Check it out on AGB.

The timing couldn’t be more appropriate, seeing as how developer Square Enix is hosting a ‘Future of Final Fantasy’ event tomorrow in Los Angeles, as part of its E3 2013 showcase.

One title in particular that is on everyone’s mind is the elusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which was announced as a PS3 exclusive back in 2006. Since then, the game has made sporadic appearances at trade shows, though a release continues to elude us.

However, it was reported back in March that the game had received a name change to Final Fantasy 15, and would be released exclusively on Sony’s next-generation console, then known by its codename Orbis.

If Sony has nabbed a new Final Fantasy title as an exclusive for PS4, then that’s a major advantage over the competition.

Stay tuned to PSU.com for more details.

'Future of Final Fantasy' pre-E3 event announced for June 11

Pre-E3 shows seem to be the new trend, just like starting Black Friday on Thanksgiving, to give developers a leg up on hyping up their titles before the expo starts. Square Enix is hopping on the bandwagon with a pre-E3 event titled the "Future of Final Fantasy."

Just today, publications like Destructoid received invites to the event with little information other than they would be able to ask Square Enix senior vice president Shinji Hashimoto some questions at that time.

What does the "Future of Final Fantasy" have in store for us? Maybe more Lightning Returns, a localized Final Fantasy Type-0, or Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Surely Final Fantasy XV will at last be unveiled. Stay tuned to PSU for the latest on Final Fantasy and more.

Dark Horse Comics has announced that an art book for the Final Fantasy series of games entitled " The Sky : The Art of Final Fantasy, " is now available for pre-order for the price of $89.99.

The Dark Horse site has this to say about what fans can expect from the 640 page hardcover book written and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano due for release on July 24.

" Previously available only as a part of the now sold-out The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy Boxed Set, Dark Horse is pleased to offer fans another chance to own the three-book hardcover set The Sky I, II, and III, included in the new The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy Slipcased Edition!

The Sky I, II, and III showcase Amano's ethereal illustrations for the first ten Final Fantasy games! Each hardcover book in The Sky Slipcased Edition is 11 5/8" high by 10 5/8" wide, and printed on glossy stock. Volume 1 contains Amano's work for Final Fantasy I-III. Volume 2 contains his contributions for Final Fantasy IV-VI, and volume 3 features his art for Final Fantasy VII-X.

The slipcase containing The Sky I, II, and III features the same wraparound exterior artwork as The Sky Boxed Set, with a double-hinged flap that folds around the open edge and is held flat to the back side with a hidden magnetic closure, making it easy both to remove the books and to display the set closed."

The Final Fantasy RPG series has sold more than a 100 million units worldwide since its launch in 1987 so this book is sure to sell out fast.

Final Fantasy Agito trademark registered in Japan

You are here: Home » News » Final Fantasy Type 0 » Final Fantasy Agito trademark re...

Posted May 27th, 2013 at 05:21 EDT by Mike Harradence1 Comments

The Japanese arm of Square Enix has registered a new trademark for Final Fantasy Agito.

Of course, fans of the venerable RPG series will no doubt recognise the Agito name, as it was the original title of the PlayStation Portable release, Final Fantasy Type-0. Sadly, that game only saw release in Japan and has yet to be released in the U.S. and Europe.

Agito was conceived under the umbrella of Final Fantasy XIII-related projects known as Fabula Nova Crystallis, before Square distanced the title from that particular trapping. It was renamed Type-0 and released in Japan in 2010.

The trademark itself makes no mention of Final Fantasy XIII, and simply lists ‘Final Fantasy Agito.’

What could Square be planning? Is it the long overdue western release of FF Agito, or perhaps an all-new project? We’ll hopefully find out for sure come E3 next month.

Day 819 to Day 832: Final Push, Country Founders and Last Closed Beta

April 7, 2013

The Final Push

Well with just over 3 weeks until our planned Open Beta it feels like this is the Final Push.  All the core functionality is coming together.  The UI is being finished off.  The To Do list is getting manageable.   On the programming side the To Do list was over 150 most times, is now down to around 50.  I look forward to our last Closed Beta starting April 16th, and then finally our Open Beta starting April 30th.  It has been a challenging road, but we have learned much along the way, and look forward to bringing WorldAlpha to a larger audience.

Country Founders

Over the last few weeks, we have had a few more Country Founders sign up.  Here are the countries that we have thus far.

Lunar Empire

Lunar Empire

Eagle Nation

Eagle Nation

United Republic

United Republic States

EGE

Earth Galactic Empire

Plus we had another country founder sign up yesterday, but we haven’t received the name, and there will be one additional admin-led country.  So, thus far 6 countries, and we can add more if anyone is interested, you can sign-up for a Founder’s Pack, and find out more details about Country Founders here.

Last Closed Beta and Open Beta Dates

Our seventh and final beta is going to take place on April 16th to April 22nd.   We want to make this our biggest and best beta thus far.  So, for all of those who have beta tested thus far, please come back and give it a final look through.  We appreciate all the input our beta testers have had, and the changes that have resulted from hearing from our dedicated citizens.    If you have beta tested before you can just login with the same email and password.  For someone who needs a beta key you can get one here:
