There are a lot of reasons why someone might want to check out a guide like T Dub Sanders'. One might be interested in the underside of the game testing field. Others might just want to know what they can gain from a guide that is written to help people understand their role in the gaming industry. Others still are just pining for that ultimate career working alongside game developers and designers.

Whatever the reason, T Dub Sanders has put together one of the biggest and best game testing guides on the market – one that shows the underpinnings of the career in their raw, real format. There are no false promises of automatic testing or sitting at home and playing the newest games for hundreds of dollars a day.

That stuff is all pretty much a pipe dream and most people know it – yet many guide writers try to tell everyone that they can become the biggest and best new game testers in a field that doesn't really exist every day and too many fall for it. On the other hand, what T Dub has put together is a much more realistic, much more comprehensive look at what game testing is really about – the hard work and dedication that goes into becoming someone in charge of all that code each day.

By showing what it really takes to be a game tester, T Dub opens up an actual, realistic path to getting into the industry. He showcases skills needed to get started as a tester, the classes or college majors that people better be willing to invest in if they want to be a professional in this field and much more to help them figure out not only if the career path is right for them but if they are going to be cut out for it. That means a great deal for someone who may or may not know exactly what a game tester does and how it operates.

For anyone that is thinking about taking the path toward becoming a game tester, one of the first things that needs to be done is to learn more about what the career entails. Those people should pick up T Dub's newest guide and get a real insider's look at the job and how it really works. If you're serious about doing what T Dub shows you, you'll be on the fast track toward game testing in no time flat.

EA responds to Xbox 180, online passes not coming back for next-gen

You are here: Home » News » EA responds to Xbox 180, online ...

Posted June 20th, 2013 at 09:13 EDT by Will Robinson7 Comments

In light of Microsoft’s recent policy changes, Polygon was notified by Electronic Arts regarding the status of their former Online Pass policy for games. Now that all next-generation systems are DRM free, will the policy be reinstated? EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg had this to say on the matter:

“[There is] no change to our decision to discontinue Online Pass. It is dead. As we said a few weeks ago, none of our new EA titles will include online pass, and we are removing it from existing games as well. Nothing else on today's news, but did want to be clear that our online pass decision was based on player feedback, and there's no change.”

EA changed their Online Pass policy back in May after it had been in practice for over three years. The policy was designed to make used game sales profitable for game developers by requiring input of a one-time code to access the networking features of a game, such as DLC and online multiplayer.

PS Plus won't be required on PS4 for online movie&TV streaming, social features, and auto-updates

You are here: Home » News » PS Plus won't be required on PS4...

Posted June 18th, 2013 at 12:27 EDT by Ernest Lin18 Comments

While a PlayStation Plus subscription will be required for online multiplayer on the PlayStation 4, it will not be required for many other functions thankfully. Speaking to VideoGamer.com, Sony confirmed a number of features that will not need PS Plus to work including online movie and TV streaming, social features, and the previously Plus-exclusive auto-update ability.

"If you choose not to subscribe we are still gating relatively little in many senses, so access to online catch-up TV and online movie services sit outside of the gate, for example. The social features of PS4 and PS4 games sit out of the subscription service... things like auto-updates on PS4 sit outside of PlayStation Plus, so we're trying to be as balanced and as fair as we possibly can," explained Sony Computer Entertainment Europe UK & Ireland Managing Director Fergal Gara.

"If you choose to pay the subscription, yes, you get one important element of modern-day gameplay, but you also get fantastic value in games, including the PlayStation Plus Edition of DriveClub."

Allowing media streaming from apps such as Netflix and Hulu is a good decision by Sony, who's PlayStation 3 was the top platform for Netflix. My family, like many, very frequently uses their PS3 for Netflix and PS4 is positioned to be another great media device in addition to a gaming console.

Stay tuned to PSU for breaking news on the PS4 and everything PlayStation.

PS4 is a 'great platform' for MMOs, says DC Universe Online producer

You are here: Home » News » PS4 is a 'great platform' for MM...

Posted June 3rd, 2013 at 03:36 EDT by Steve Chaffin2 Comments

Discussing the success of DC Universe Online on the PlayStation 3, the game's producer, Larry Liberty, said in an interview with NowGamer that the PlayStation 4 will be a 'great platform for MMOs'.

DC Universe Online, developed by Sony Online Entertainment, was launched in 2009 and became a free-to-play title starting November 1, 2011, and to date is one of the first and only MMO titles available on consoles.

"We proved that we could get a full-featured MMO onto the PS3 and that it could be very successful," Liberty said. "The majority of our player base is on the PS3, and we get thousands of new players each day."

Liberty went on to praise SOE for its efforts towards creating a stable environment for console MMOs and free-to-play titles, both of which were widely considered unthinkable at the onset of the current gaming generation.

"They've become a great partner, and are genuinely interested in effecting change that will make their platforms work better for free-to-play titles," he said.

Considering the success of DC Universe Online on the PlayStation 3, the working relationship developers are forging with SOE, Liberty is optimistic regarding the PS4's ability to become a good source of MMO and free-to-play titles in the coming years.

"I would expect that, with all of the amazing features that have been announced for the next PlayStation, that it will be a great platform for MMOs," he said.

The PS4, despite little being known publicly about it, has already garnered considerable praise from developers and publishers across the board. More information regarding Sony's upcoming next generation console will be revealed next Monday at E3.

DUST 514 and EVE Online server back online

Posted June 3rd, 2013 at 06:57 EDT by Alex Locher0 Comments

Last night PSU reported that Tranquility, the single shard server that houses DUST 514 and EVE Online, had been taken offline after a sustained DDoS attack.

After toiling through the wee hours of the morning, CCP has announced that Traquility is back online and good to go. Chief Operating Officer Jón Hörðdal Jónasson explained some details of the attack in a statement on the dust514.com news page:

"What we can now confirm is that a person was able to utilize a vulnerability in one of the back-end services that support the operation of the Tranquility server. This vulnerability has now been secured and thoroughly tested.

We would like to stress that at no time was customer data compromised or accessible in any way.

The effort of returning the complex server structure of the EVE Universe and associated websites to service in a methodical and highly-scrutinized fashion began hours ago and Tranquillity has now been brought online (at 10:13 UTC). Our teams will monitor the situation carefully in the coming hours to ensure that our services are accessible and that all customer data remains secure."

He also stated that there will be some kind of compensation for EVE and DUST players and that this info will be announced soon.

EA is removing Online Passes from past, present, and future games: 'We heard the feedback from players'

You are here: Home » News » EA is removing Online Passes fro...

Posted May 30th, 2013 at 12:36 EDT by Kyle Prahl7 Comments

After listening to feedback from players (which we're surprised took this long), EA has decided to terminate its Online Pass program permanently and remove Online Pass requirements for its past, present, and future titles.

The publisher announced earlier this month that none of its future titles would receive Online Passes, but this is our first indication of the requirement being removed for past games as well. It'll be a phased rollout that happens in stages, with past EA Sports games being the first to no longer require it. In the next couple months, the requirement will rescind for more and more titles.

"As we discontinue Online Pass for our new EA titles, we are also in the process of eliminating it from all our existing EA titles as well," a spokesperson told Eurogamer. "We heard the feedback from players and decided to do away with Online Pass altogether.

"Players will see it first with some EA Sports titles, where a prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear in-game; with other titles we are simply making Online Passes available free of charge online."

Are you excited to see one publisher step back from used game control? Is this EA's response to Xbox One's internet requirement, which won't affect PS4 gamers?

Kyle Prahl doesn't buy used games, because the games he buys have developers that are worth the cash. You can follow him on Twitter and Facebook.

Mass Effect 3, Battlefield 3 among first EA titles to have Online Pass removed

You are here: Home » News » Mass Effect 3, Battlefield 3 amo...

Posted May 30th, 2013 at 17:06 EDT by Steve Chaffin1 Comments

The first set of games from which EA will remove its controversial Online Pass has been detailed.

As we reported earlier, EA is responding to widespread negative feedback by removing Online Passes from past, present, and future EA titles. Originally, this was thought to pertain only to future titles, but the publisher took it a step further by announcing today that the changes would also apply to its already-released lineup.

EA has made online passes for the following games free, or has removed the online pass for the title altogether:

Alice: Madness Returns
Battlefield 3 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Bulletstorm
Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3
Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3
Medal of Honor
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, Need For Speed: The Run, and Need For Speed: Shift 2
Skate 3
The Sims 3

For more information on EA's decision, see our earlier report.
