Infinity Ward has offered clarification on its supposed new game engine Call of Duty: Ghosts, confirming it’s a significantly upgraded piece of tech rather than something built completely from scratch.
Reports indicated that Ghosts had been built on an all-new engine, though this was brought into question after footage of the title surfaced at Microsoft’s Xbox One event earlier this week.
Speaking with OPM, Zach Volker, Infinity Ward’s animation lead, commented: “When we’re talking about a new engine we’re talking about upgrading significant systems within in that engine. We’re not talking about throwing it all away and saying we’re starting from the ground up”.
Volker said that it would be “impossible to develop a new engine from the ground up in a two years cycle,” adding, “What we do is we say, ‘okay what are the things that are significant and that we would say that are encompassing of the engine or its visual quality? Are those being upgraded in a significant way? Alright, then I think that warrants that we’ve got a new engine on our hands’”.
Call of Duty: Ghosts is scheduled for release on multiple platforms, including next-generation consoles, in November.
