In an interview with IGN, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the writers behind the hit comedy movies Superbad and This is The End, revealed that Uncharted creator Naughty Dog have approached the duo many times in the past four years about writing the film adaptation of the action-adventure game franchise.
“They’re [Naughty Dog] constantly asking me and Evan to make the Uncharted movie,” said Rogen. He and Goldberg are big fans of the Uncharted games, but have declined taking up writing the script because they feel they don't know a fresh approach to bringing Nathan Drake to the big screen.
“It’s just going to be Indiana Jones. If we could figure out a way to make it not Indiana Jones, it’d be awesome,” explained Goldberg.
Sony began developing an Uncharted film back in 2007, but unfortunately it appears the project may be stuck in development hell. Award-winning director David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter) nearly started production on the film in 2011 with Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake. Russell's Uncharted never happened due to the controversy for changing the story to include Drake’s father and uncle, to be played by Robert De Niro and Joe Peschi.
After Russell left, The Illusionist director Neil Burger stepped in to direct in July 2012, only to leave the project a month later. The last update on the project came in August of last year when it was reported National Treasure scribes Marianne and Cormac Wibberley were rewriting the film.
