There are a lot of reasons why someone might want to check out a guide like T Dub Sanders'. One might be interested in the underside of the game testing field. Others might just want to know what they can gain from a guide that is written to help people understand their role in the gaming industry. Others still are just pining for that ultimate career working alongside game developers and designers.

Whatever the reason, T Dub Sanders has put together one of the biggest and best game testing guides on the market – one that shows the underpinnings of the career in their raw, real format. There are no false promises of automatic testing or sitting at home and playing the newest games for hundreds of dollars a day.

That stuff is all pretty much a pipe dream and most people know it – yet many guide writers try to tell everyone that they can become the biggest and best new game testers in a field that doesn't really exist every day and too many fall for it. On the other hand, what T Dub has put together is a much more realistic, much more comprehensive look at what game testing is really about – the hard work and dedication that goes into becoming someone in charge of all that code each day.

By showing what it really takes to be a game tester, T Dub opens up an actual, realistic path to getting into the industry. He showcases skills needed to get started as a tester, the classes or college majors that people better be willing to invest in if they want to be a professional in this field and much more to help them figure out not only if the career path is right for them but if they are going to be cut out for it. That means a great deal for someone who may or may not know exactly what a game tester does and how it operates.

For anyone that is thinking about taking the path toward becoming a game tester, one of the first things that needs to be done is to learn more about what the career entails. Those people should pick up T Dub's newest guide and get a real insider's look at the job and how it really works. If you're serious about doing what T Dub shows you, you'll be on the fast track toward game testing in no time flat.

PS4 Launch Edition - Join the PlayStation community

You are here: Home » News » PS4 Launch Edition - Join the Pl...

Posted June 26th, 2013 at 07:31 EDT by Steven Williamson5 Comments

PlayStation Universe hosts one of the biggest and most vibrant PlayStation communities on the web and many of our readers are going to be among the first to own a PlayStation 4 when it launches this year.

That’s why we want you to know that PSU is the best place to discuss PlayStation 4 with fellow core gamers. Forum Elder, Savage360, has taken imitative and set up a PS4 Launch Edition thread specifically for those people who have pre-ordered a PS4. This will be a place where those getting the console on day one can enjoy the build-up to release date and can immediately talk about their experiences when they unwrap their new shiny PS4.

Here’s what Savage360, who has actually ordered three PS4s for himself, has to say:

“Hello everyone! With the recent PlayStation 4 announcements such as price and availability many people in the world have already pre-ordered the PlayStation 4 to get ready for the launch of a next-generation of gaming.

I wanted to make a thread that's dedicated to people who have already pre-ordered a PlayStation 4 and are guaranteed to be playing on Day One. This thread will be updated all-through-out the launch and will contain a list of people from PSU who have "Launch Edition" of the PlayStation 4. It doesn't matter where you get the system from whether it’s Amazon, Best Buy or Gamestop.

If you have already own/reserve a PlayStation 4 and will be playing on Day One please list your name in this thread to be added and that way we can all jump in and have a launch party/fun time when Sony's next-generation hardware finally launches.”

Day 889 to Day 904: Community Input Wanted: Military Module

June 18, 2013

Well after a month of really no military action, High Commanders finally got into gear this past week or so, and launched into battle.  The result is as I feared as this module was being developed through Closed Beta.  The game mechanics don’t allow for all those who want to be involved, to get into the fun.  So, we are a point of trying to rethink the military module, and are reaching out to the community to get some insights.  Here are the six major issues with the military module as it stands now.

Movement/Getting into battle is not soldier-ledFighting is time-based. You must be on at the right time to participate fully.  Your citizen does fight when you are offline, but not much fun just logging in and seeing what happened.Citizens can’t own their “own unit”Citizens can’t own and equip their own weaponsSoldiers can’t select a Unit or Crew to be a part ofMovement and Fighting disrupts a citizen’s activity queue, by deleting all items.

My attempt was to make the game as realistic as possible.  So, in real-life your average Joe, can’t just create a military unit for their country.  Soldiers typically don’t bring their own guns to the military, etc.  I realize now to make it more enjoyable, that we need to bend the realism rules a little.  So, here are some suggestions we would like to make, to change the gameplay.  We are looking for our community to let us also know their thoughts.

Here are some solutions we have thought of, in no particular order

#4. Allow Soldiers to buy and equip their own weapons

#5. Allows Soldiers to select their own unit/crew.  Ability to make a unit/crew by application only

#6. Have activity queue pause until soldier returns home

#3. Allow citizens to create their own unit.  Unit still must be tied to a country and city and can be moved by appropriate High Command.

#1. With #5 soldiers can now choose which unit they want to be a part of, and obviously if they are in battle or not.  Also #3 allows them to create their own if they wish.

#2. This is the most difficult one.  We’ve bantered about maybe having a collective Health Bar, that you can damage the other side, and add to your own with health items whenever you login.  Every say ½ hour the health damage is then applied to all soldiers and vehicles, probably in a weighted fashion.   This does take away the PvP element we were trying to instill though.

So, there you have it.  Looking forward to hearing what the community has to say about our Military Module.  We would like to get all input by June 23, so we can start to implement next week.

Note: According to my word count, I’ve surpassed 15,000 words in my DevBlogs!

PS4 user-interface video showcases connectivity, sharing and community

You are here: Home » News » Electronic Entertainment Expo [E3... » PS4 user-interface video sh...

Posted June 11th, 2013 at 10:03 EDT by Steven Williamson4 Comments

If your head was still pounding with all the exciting PS4 news as the Sony E3 press conference came to a close, then you may not have been paying too much attention to the short user interface video near the end, which you can now see below.

In the video, we see a young guy playing Knack and not doing too well. On the verge of giving up, he gets a message from a friend with a video showing how she beats the monster. This demonstrates how you can seamlessly move between user-generated content back to the game with a press of the button and also showcases the ability to share and communicate on PS4, something which is further compounded by the interruption of another friend via his ear-piece asking him to come and play Killzone: Shadow Fall.

The guy begins a download of Killzone’s multiplayer and instantly returns to his game while it downloads in the background. A notification pops up and the guy heads over to help his friend out in Killzone where you once again see him making a mess of things. No problem! A hit of the Share button allows his friend to send him a video of how to aim down his sights properly, duh!

All of this demonstrates how Sony plans to connect gamers on PS4, allow them to communicate easily and share with the touch of the button. It’s impressive stuff! Check it out…

Day 722 to Day 748: Community Input Needed on New UI

January 13, 2013

We’re Back

We trust everyone had a good Christmas and New Years.  After a great holiday season celebrating with family and friends, we are back and ready to launch WorldAlpha in the next few months.  We are in the final stages trying to get everything to come together.  It has now been 2 years since I first conceived of WorldAlpha and so it is good to see that the end of development is near, and the game is about to begin!  Also, during the break we’ve had over 10,000 people sign-up to be beta testers.

Closed Beta #3

Just before the holidays we had our 3rd closed beta.  I realized when scheduling the date that it was close to Christmas, but we still had a good response from our beta testers.  Over 170 bugs/suggestions were submitted.

Community Input Needed on New UI

Well, we now have 2 concepts for a new UI look for WorldAlpha and we would like our community to have their say!  Please let us know what you like or don’t like about each of the 2 new concepts and helps us for the final UI for the game. Click on them to see full size.

I #2 looks the best - Will http://artcontrol.me

I prefer the #1 one. The white theme and metal looking bars make it look like you're playing a space game.
January 14, 2013 | Martijnie

#2 but with the colour scheme of #1. Actually the white of #2 makes it look empty and is kind of a turn off but the buttons and navigation seems slightly more intuitive (tough to say without actually playing). Since things can always be made to look prettier later, I would vote #2.
January 14, 2013 | Alias

I prefer #2. #1 was too confusing to navigate. While neither is standing out, I think you need to rethink the navigation system if you are going with #1.
January 13, 2013 | CamAllen

I prefer if is posible to have grapchics of 1 and button design of 2. Will be very nice :)
January 13, 2013 | Demon Lee

of those i also prefer #1 ..#2 just doesnt flow aswell and dont like the white sheet metal look at all

I prefer UI Concept #2
January 13, 2013 | Ivailo

I think the fist one LOOKS the best. So, now answer my question. :>
January 13, 2013 | Albin

I prefer Concept #1. I like have the player information right at the top. Also because I like the activity and quest tabs at the bottom.
January 13, 2013 | Toad

Also like the quest and activity tabs in the bottom right and left. They would come in handy.
January 13, 2013 | popu888

Hey Mike, hope your holidays were fun. I just got back from China so i can start doing stuff again :P. I prefer the first UI concept because having expandable tabs jumbled around is disorientating and the background is prettier.
January 13, 2013 | popu888

UI concept #2 (both versions): too bright, seems like if glued from random designs found somewhere. Concept #1: cool, however, the icons look "strange".
