There are a lot of reasons why someone might want to check out a guide like T Dub Sanders'. One might be interested in the underside of the game testing field. Others might just want to know what they can gain from a guide that is written to help people understand their role in the gaming industry. Others still are just pining for that ultimate career working alongside game developers and designers.

Whatever the reason, T Dub Sanders has put together one of the biggest and best game testing guides on the market – one that shows the underpinnings of the career in their raw, real format. There are no false promises of automatic testing or sitting at home and playing the newest games for hundreds of dollars a day.

That stuff is all pretty much a pipe dream and most people know it – yet many guide writers try to tell everyone that they can become the biggest and best new game testers in a field that doesn't really exist every day and too many fall for it. On the other hand, what T Dub has put together is a much more realistic, much more comprehensive look at what game testing is really about – the hard work and dedication that goes into becoming someone in charge of all that code each day.

By showing what it really takes to be a game tester, T Dub opens up an actual, realistic path to getting into the industry. He showcases skills needed to get started as a tester, the classes or college majors that people better be willing to invest in if they want to be a professional in this field and much more to help them figure out not only if the career path is right for them but if they are going to be cut out for it. That means a great deal for someone who may or may not know exactly what a game tester does and how it operates.

For anyone that is thinking about taking the path toward becoming a game tester, one of the first things that needs to be done is to learn more about what the career entails. Those people should pick up T Dub's newest guide and get a real insider's look at the job and how it really works. If you're serious about doing what T Dub shows you, you'll be on the fast track toward game testing in no time flat.

Pin ItArticle EditDiscussBoxelder bugs are roughly 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) in length and are commonly characterized by the red markings along an otherwise black or dark brown abdomen. They are attracted to the boxelder tree, but may also gather in places where maple and ash trees grow. Here's how to get rid of boxelder bug infestations using chemical, organic, and manual means.

EditSteps

Method One: Chemical Insecticides1Use a perimeter treatment. A perimeter treatment is formulated for use around the exterior of the house and other structures. Spray one of these insecticides around all possible openings, including the entire perimeter of the home, attic vents, basement windows, cellars, windows, doors, siding, garden sheds, and garages.[1]

While this will not destroy all the boxelder bugs living in your yard, it will prevent them from getting inside. The bugs that pass over the insecticide barrier will also die, thereby reducing the population in your yard.Concentrate on spraying the south and southwest sides of the house or yard.Use a backpack sprayer or power spray rig to achieve maximum coverage. Direct the opening of the sprayer hose toward the area to be treated. Activate the spraying mechanism by pulling the trigger of the sprayer and apply the insecticide in a steady stream.Pyrethrin-based are among the most effective types to use against boxelder bugs.[2] These sprays are made from a highly poisonous compound found in pyrethrum flowers, and other chemicals may also be added to increase their effectiveness.Do not use perimeter insecticides on your lawn. These chemicals will often damage your grass and other plants.2Call professionals. If you lack the equipment or if home treatment proves ineffective, call a professional exterminator to rid your yard of the bugs.

When you contact the exterminator, indicate whether you want him to prevent the bugs from entering your home or if you want a solution that will remove them from your yard completely. Perimeter treatment is more common, and if you do not specifically state your desire to be rid of the bugs completely, the exterminator may not take measures to remove them from your yard.

Method Two: Organic Insecticides1Spray the bugs with soap and water. Add 1 or 2 Tbsp (15 to 30 ml) of dish soap to a standard-size spray bottle filled with water. Shake well to combine, and spray the soapy solution on boxelder bugs as you see them.

There are several theories as to why soap effectively kills boxelder bugs. The leading theory is that the soap breaks down the hardened skin of the insect, causing the bug's cell membranes to deteriorate. As a result, the bugs dehydrate and die.[3]Note that this only works when the spray is used directly on the boxelder bug. When you see a group of these bugs, douse it with soapy water, making sure to coat each individual insect. Soap has no residual effect on boxelder bugs that do not come into direct contact with it.2Spread diatomaceous earth.[4] Sprinkle this substance around the perimeter of your house, around the base of boxelder trees, and in any area of the yard where boxelder bugs seem to gather.

Diatomaceous earth is a porous sedimentary deposit that consists of fossilized phytoplankton called diatoms. You can find diatomaceous earth at most home improvement stores. You may also be able to find it at retail garden supply centers.Wear gloves and other protective clothing as you spread this substance. You should also carefully follow the instructions printed on the label of the container. While this substance is non-toxic to humans, it is quite possible to have an allergic reaction to it.Diatomaceous earth kills boxelder bugs and other insects by breaking down their hard, protective coating, similar to the way in which soap kills insects.3Use borax. Sprinkle a coating of borax around the base of boxelder trees, inside the exterior siding of your house, and anywhere in your yard where large groups of boxelder bugs gather.

Borax is a white boron-based compound often used for green household cleaning. You can usually buy borax in the cleaning aisle of major grocery stores and some larger drug stores or department stores.Like diatomaceous earth, borax breaks down the protective coating of the boxelder bug, killing it by destroying cell membranes and ultimately dehydrating the bug.

Method Three: Manual Removal1Remove female boxelder trees from the yard. Boxelder bugs are only attracted to female boxelder trees, so removing these and only planting male boxelder trees will usually fix the problem.

Boxelder trees that bear seed or fruit are female.[5] You can also identify female boxelder trees by looking at the flowers. The flowers of female boxelder trees share one stalk, while those on male boxelder trees do not.2Introduce predators into the environment. The natural predators of the boxelder bug are the praying mantis and most types of spiders.[6]

Note that this is fairly risky move to make. Purposefully introducing a new insect into your yard's ecosystem can upset the balance, and you may find yourself with a praying mantis or spider problem after the boxelder bugs have been reduced. You can place praying mantis egg cases or captured spiders in your bushes or trees. Alternatively, you can attract praying mantises to your yard by planting rose bushes and raspberry bushes. Plants that attract small "prey" bugs are also good at attracting both the praying mantis and many varieties of spider.3Hose them down.[7] As soon as you see the bugs beginning to gather, spray them out of the yard with a forceful jet stream of water from an ordinary garden hose.

This will not kill the bugs and may not offer a permanent solution, but it will deter the boxelder bugs from gathering. As such, it proves most useful if done toward the beginning of an infestation.4Remove or kill them by hand. If the infestation is still small, you can literally squash the problem early by stomping on or swatting the bugs when you see them in your yard.

Alternatively, you can trap them in jars and release them outside of your yard. Wear gloves when doing this in case you are forced to touch them in the process.

GTA V questions answered: mandatory install, character switching, and more

You are here: Home » News » Grand Theft Auto V » GTA V questions answered: mandat...

Posted July 2nd, 2013 at 10:57 EDT by Will Robinson1 Comments

Today, developer Rockstar answered many of the questions surrounding Grand Theft Auto V in a Q&A article posted on their website.

One particular point of interest touched on is that GTA V will have a mandatory install before you can jump into the game. While many games already require minor installs, Grand Theft Auto V’s will be around 8GB, over twice the size of the previous entry in the series. The install will begin as soon as the disc is inserted, so be sure to make some space on your HDD beforehand.

Rockstar also answered questions about GTAV’s three protagonists and how switching between them works:

“Michael, Franklin and Trevor have their own separate lives with their own sets of friends and acquaintances, and even their own preferred ways of spending their free time. When you’re not on a mission, you can freely switch in real-time to any of the three characters to drop in and out of their lives letting you see what they’re up to. And because they have their own schedules, you’ll never know what they might be doing – you might drop in on Michael in the middle of a family dispute, interrupt Franklin chatting up some ladies, or Trevor on the run from the law – or whatever else these guys do in their free time... How and when you switch between characters when you’re not on a mission is completely up to you.

In addition, each of the guys has their own missions and side jobs. There will be times on a mission when you play as one character, or as combinations of two of them, and sometimes as all three, always being able to switch between the characters mid-action. Off mission, it’s up to you. You can play as one character on his own or hang out with either of the other two or both of them, or you can switch between any of them.”

Rockstar also mentions that GTAV will also come with a physical map of the game world, following series tradition, and that official gameplay footage will become available soon.

Grand Theft Auto V will be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17.

Square Enix has revealed that Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII’s eponymous heroine can be kitted out to look just like Cloud Strife from fan-favourite Final Fantasy VII.

Pre-ordering the upcoming action-RPG sequel will allow Lightning to wear Cloud’s costume, complete with his iconic Buster Sword. The clobber forms part of the pre-order bonus pack, which also features a limited edition steelbook.

That’s not all though. Square is also hinting at more Cloud-related goodies unlocked when you wear his outfit, stating, “Specific abilities that come with the Cloud outfit and weapon will be announced at a later time.”

Elsewhere, another pre-order pack nets you the Lightning Samurai Set, featuring a Shogun, Sohei Savior and Flower of the Battle outfits.

Lightning Returns will be striking PS3 and Xbox 360 in February 2014.

What do you think of the Cloud outfit? Does it tempt you into pre-ordering the game? Or perhaps you aren’t fussed about FFVII and would rather plump for the Samurai pack? Let us now in the comments section below.

GTA V PS3, Xbox 360 visual differences 'completely negligible'

You are here: Home » News » Grand Theft Auto V » GTA V PS3, Xbox 360 visual diffe...

Posted July 2nd, 2013 at 11:50 EDT by Mike Harradence6 Comments

Rockstar has confirmed that gamers can expect only ‘negligible’ visual differences between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Grand Theft Auto V.

The comments come following a Q&A session on the company’s official website, where the developer spilled the beans on a number of details regarding its hotly-anticipated crime romp.

"Like all of our games, trust that we're committed to making sure Grand Theft Auto V looks and runs as great as possible regardless of whether you pick it up for PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360," said the company, adding "and we are excited for fans on both platforms to experience Grand Theft Auto V this September.

"We expect any visual differences to be completely negligible."

Elsewhere, Rockstar remained tight-lipped on a possible PlayStation 4 and Xbox One iteration of the open-world action title.

“We don’t have anything to share about the possibility of a next-gen or a PC platform release at this time and we are completely focused on delivering the best possible experience for the console people have right now.”

GTA V is scheduled to ship for PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17.

PS3 Game of the Month: June 2013

You are here: Home » Features » The Last of Us » PS3 Game of the Month: June 2013

Posted July 2nd, 2013 at 01:33 EDT by Mike Harradence2 Comments

So, summer’s officially with us, and that in theory means we’ll all be outside soaking up some rays and getting some much-needed vitamin D. However, thanks to the release of a little-known title called The Last of Us, I doubt that’s the case for many of you, even if the month of June does signal a traditionally dry spell in the game release calendar. Yep, aside from the odd gem, the next couple of months are going to be pretty lacklustre in terms of triple-A software releases, though fortunately that gives us ample opportunity to take our backlog for a spin – and if you’re anything like me, you’ll have more than enough games to keep you distracted (speaking as someone who’s only just got around to playing Assassin’s Creed III).

In terms of releases, they don’t get any bigger than The Last of Us for June. Developed by Naughty Dog, the PlayStation 3’s post-apocalyptic adventure romp is a master class in storytelling, boasting a gritty backdrop populated by compelling characters and jaw-dropping visuals. The gameplay’s just as strong too, blending stealth with cover-based shooting as you scavenge for supplies across a U.S. devastated by a deadly fungal plague. To be fair though, The Last of Us wasn’t the only game worth a punt; Deadpool is an enjoyable, irreverent stab at the comic book-‘em-up genre, with the ubiquitous Nolan North’s sarcastic hero poking fun at various game design trappings such as QTEs while cussing out his enemies in the process. It's flawed, yes, but there's something here for fans of the genre.

Racing fans meanwhile had their annual does of MotoGP to tuck into, with this latest entry proving just as competent, throwing in the usual barrage of teams, tracks and trinkets to make it worth the upgrade. Sadly it doesn’t get much better than that though, with Ubisoft’s long-delayed biker bash Ride to Hell: Retribution proving to be one of the worst titles of this generation, let alone 2013. Quite how a game announced in 2008 can resurface five years later and create such a stink is almost incomprehensible, but there you go – avoid this one like the plague, folks.

Okay, we’ll admit the winner of June’s Game of the Month won’t be a surprise, but we love any excuse to sing its praise: yep, the vote goes to The Last of Us, and with good reason. Naughty Dog has created a stunning video game in Joel and Ellie’s adventure, with the title not only raising the bar from a technical standpoint, but in terms of narration, you’ll won’t find anything as emotionally engaging this side of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Aside from the aforementioned single-player campaign, Naughty Dog has managed to capture the essence of the main quest with the multiplayer component, as teams of survivors fight for survival across destroyed landscapes in hopes to secure essential supplies and expand their base. Simply put, The Last of Us is one of PS3’s finest entry to date and a fitting swansong for Sony's seven-year-old work horse.

Check out our full review here, and read a quick snippet below.

"The Last Of Us is a game that offers an engaging and emotional journey that shifts in tone and pace, from quiet and poignant moments of reflection between characters and their situation to action-packed sequences that can leave you emotionally drained or grinning from ear-to-ear. Quite simply, Joel and Ellie are the best pairing to have graced this console generation and The Last Of Us is a fitting tribute to PlayStation 3 in the year when we usher in the next generation of consoles."

Do you think The Last of Us deserves our accolade for June's Game of the Month? Let us know in the comments section below.

Journey dev finally receiving its royalties

You are here: Home » News » Journey » Journey dev finally receiving it...

Posted July 2nd, 2013 at 08:46 EDT by Mike Harradence2 Comments

The developer behind the PlayStation 3-exclusive hit Journey has revealed that it has started to receive royalties for the critically-acclaimed adventure, which released in March 2012.

It’s a well-known fact that development of the Indie title virtually bankrupt Thatgamecompany after production overran by a year, eating up most of the studio’s backup resources.

However, the game has finally become profitable for the troubled studio, co-founder Jenova Chen has said.

“It seems that Journey sales are not really going away,” said Chen, during a chinwag with Family Gamer TV. “I’m quite curious to see what happens this quarter.”

Journey casts players in the role of a mysterious robed figured as they attempt to reach a lonely mountain far off in the distance. How you get there and who you cooperate with is entirely up to you.

Not played Journey? Be sure to check out our review to see what you’re missing out on.
